Kipsiro defines injury to win Gold

After battling with injury and pushing his body to the limits, long distance runner Moses Kipsiro won a Gold medal in the 10,000 metres at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow Scotland. The win which was at a split 0.03 seconds saw Kipsiro beat Kenya’s Josphat Bett and Canada’s Cameroon Levins.

Kipsiro admits that he was not sure he had won until an announcer mentioned after a replay of the video of the race. It was a surprise win for the track star because he had earlier finished number 8 in the 5,000 metres.

"I can’t believe it. I did not have hope of winning. I just hung on and when the hope came, I sprinted to victory. The race was slow and I knew my body. When we reached 200m, I waited for them to sprint but they did not, I kept calm. At 150m they still did not sprint and I knew I had a chance. So when they started sprinting at 100m, I also kicked with all the energy I had and then threw my chest in front just to try and see that I can have some hope of winning” said Kipsiro immediately after the race.

In winning the race, Kipsiro defended his title being the holder of the previous commonwealth gold. The victory came sweeter because Moses Kipsiro had considered pulling out of the race.
