While many people hook up their DVR for the strict purpose of avoiding commercials, it turns out millions of others seek them out online.
Google rounded up the most-watched advertisements of 2012, as seen through YouTube's eyes.
"Fans are opting to view and share content they're passionate about, be it a music video, a favorite show, or an ad," Google said. "The 2012 YouTube Ads Leaderboard celebrates the U.S. ads that most moved audiences through a winning combination of promotion (paid ads) and popularity (organic views)."
All 20 videos earned a combined 200 million views — "proof that if you make it great, they will come," Google said.
Car manufacturers dominated the list, carrying eight of the top 20 spots (two of which were occupied by Volkswagon), while Old Spice held its own by nabbing four of the bottom 10 commercials. In a category of its own, Nike Football carried the trophy this year, landing at No. 1 with its "My Time Is Now" video ad, which garnered 20,884,282 views between May and early December.
The fast-paced, three-minute commercial (watch below) shoves the viewer into a flashy, interactive soccer game set to wailing music that makes its almost 21 million viewers feel like they are part of the action. Nike also grabbed the No. 9 spot with its Mercurial Vapor VIII sneaker ad, also developed by the Wieden+Kennedy London creative agency.
One of the few food or drink companies to make the list, Pepsi scored more than 17,841,000 views with its Pepsi MAX "Uncle Drew" advert, featuring Kyrie Irving. Coming in at almost five minutes exactly, the commercial hit YouTube in mid-May.
Unsurprisingly, Samsung's "The Next Big Things is Already Here" ad, uploaded toward the end of September, grabbed the No. 4 spot. The Galaxy S III ad poked fun at Apple, which didn't even make the list. The same advertisement mocked its way to the top of Visible Measures' Top 10 Most Viral Tech Ads of 2012 list last week. The smartphone joins the GoPro Hero3 camera (No. 7) as the only two tech devices on the list.
Meanwhile, Old Spice's short-but-powerful ads pushed their way into the No. 13, 14, 19, and 20 spots on the list, featuring the same viral appeal (if not a little louder) that the company has always provided.
It wasn't all brawn this year, though. At least two commercials featured cute canines, Snoop Dog, shiny vampires, and Charlie Sheen. Even Clint Eastwood's depressingly real "Halftime in America" Super Bowl commercial cracked the top 10.
