Police is holding the Member of Parliament of Bubulo West, Manafwa District and unknown number of Uganda and Democratic Republic of Congo rebels on charges of treason.
MP Tony Kipoi Nsubuga was allegedly arrested in Matimuku Guest House in Fort Portal, Kabarole District holding a meeting with suspected Congolese rebels on Sunday.
Police spokesperson, Ms Judith Nabakooba, said in a statement that they have been monitoring MP Kipoi regarding his alleged subversive activities.
“In particular, he has been recruiting personnel from our security services as well as Congolese rebels belonging to a Congolese rebel group called COGAI, based in areas around Bunia, Ituri, Democratic Republic of Congo. He had promised to support the rebel groups with fire arms. We also have information, that Hon. Kipoi has foreign sponsors who at this point it would not be wise to disclose,” Ms Nabakooba said.
Recently, the army said Allied Democratic Front rebels led by Jamil Mukulu, who is now on the wanted list of Interpol on terror charges, were mobilising in eastern DR Congo to carry out more attacks on Uganda.
Police said they are still hunting for more suspects in relation to the subversive activities.
“As Police with its sister security agencies continue to apprehend the collaborators of Hon. Kipoi we wish to assure the general public and the country at large of safety and security as you go about your programmes of the festive season,” Ms Nabakooba said.
She said that police are also investigating Mr Kipoi on charges of trafficking in narcotic drugs.
