Xmas: 6,000 cows, goats slaughtered

More than 6,000 animals, mainly cows and goats, were slaughtered in Kampala abattoirs in the three days to Christmas. According to officials from the three main abattoirs; City Abattoir Traders Development Association (CATDA), Kisita Younger Farmers Abattoir (KYFA) and Nsooba Slaughters House (NSH), said from December 22 to 24, more than 5,000 cows and 1,000 goats were slaughtered.
Mr Muhammad Nsubuga, the secretary for CATDA at Old Port Bell Road, said 2,100 cows and 507 goats were slaughtered. At Kisita, 1,503 cows and 354 goats were slaughtered from Saturday to yesterday, while 1,645 cows and 315 goats were slaughtered at Nsooba abattoir in Kalerwe, a Kampala suburb.
Mr Juma Mutyaaba, the secretary at Kisita, said more cows were slaughtered due to the relatively low price of beef. “Many people buy beef more than goat meat because the latter costs more. So we tend to slaughter more cows compared to goats,” he said.
At the various bucheries, a kilogramme of beef cost between Shs6,000 and Shs7,000 and goat meat went for between Shs8,000 and Shs9,000.
