The late James Mulwana, a renowned
Ugandan industrialist and businessman, has been posthumously recognized
for his role in developing Uganda and his desire to see youths prosper.
Mulwana, who died in January, won the
Lifetime Achievement award at the 4th annual Young Achievers awards
(YAA) ceremony at Serena hotel last Thursday. This particular award
recognises individuals who have made significant contribution to the
country’s development and created economic opportunities for the young
generation. His family, led by Sarah Mulwana, received the award.
Mulwana started his business career in
the early sixties and went on to build a business empire that includes:
Nice House of Plastics, Uganda batteries Limited, JESA Farm Dairy among
many others. He was also a board member on some of Uganda’s leading
enterprises.
Speaking at the event, the Nnabagereka
Sylvia Nagginda commended the YAA team for the well-thought-out choice
of recognizing the man she described as “an icon, successful
businessman, philanthropist, father, husband and a humble citizen of
this country.”
The queen of Buganda kingdom said
Mulwana was, indeed, a worthy winner, given that he left a legacy that
would continue to impact future generations. The Overall Young Achiever
award went to Peter Mukiibi and Arthur Nakkaka from Addmaya, an
enterprise involved in Film, TV and Graphic Design.
The chief guest, Dr Mthuli Ncube, the
chief economist and vice president African Development Bank, called upon
the youths to stop the idea of thinking that it is the responsibility
of government to solve their problems but, instead, be part and parcel
of the solution.
He urged organisers to create “an entrepreneurship eco-system” to train youths to start and grow credible businesses.
