Makerere University yesterday agreed to suspend issuance of
admission letters to first year students following resistance from the
guild body against a proposed tuition increment.
This was reached at a meeting with the Inspector
General of Police Gen Kale Kayihura, Guild president Ivan Bwowe,
academic staff chairperson, Muhammed Kiggundu and the university Vice
Chancellor, Prof John Ssentamu-Ddumba, after students were blocked by
police from the main gate as they tried to move to Parliament to present
a petition to the Speaker.
Police had deployed at the university to quell
demonstrations by students. But Gen Kayihura regretted the incidente,
saying students would get his support as long as their issues were
genuine. He, however, warned them against using violence. The matter
arises from a 10 per cent tuition increment enacted this year.
