Makerere University has taken the lion’s
share after winning four key top positions at the just concluded Uganda
National Students Association elections in Soroti District.
The Guild Vice President of Makerere University, Lillian Aber turned victorious as the new UNSA President 2015/2016. She beat two other contestants.
Nagenjwa Sharon from Uganda Christian University and Mulundu Edgar Wandwasi, the Guild President of Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST) lost to Aber.
The excited Lillian told Campus Times
that though she feels happy about her victory as UNSA President, she is
disappointed about vote rigging that is spoiling the students body. She
says her effects will be geared towards building a disciplined UNSA.
“I will focus on building a disciplined
mode of leadership at UNSA through advocacy and lobbying,” Lillian Aber,
the newly elected President told Campus Times.
Lillian Aber takes over from Matanda Abubakar the outgoing UNSA President 2013/2014.
Makerere university’s Benson M Chark was voted as the new Speaker. He takes over from Anna Adeke Ebaju.
Ahamya Sandra was voted Deputy General
Secretary and Bwesigye Phillip won the slot for Secretary International
Affairs. These are all students from Makerere University.
How Lilian Aber became Victorious.
Those in her camp praised how smart
Lillian was in her strategy to out compete the rest. The strongest point
that fostered her victory was the emotional motherly appeal that left
many males with no option but to say yes to her humble request; Vote for
me.
The laxity in the NRM camp also gave
Aber an upper edge. Most of the students in the NRM camp spent most of
their time fighting for the 50 million shillings that President Yoweri Kaguta Museven dumped in the oldest student’s body (UNSA) on Monday 26th January 2015.
This cash did not only cause inflation
but also led to unwanted divisions, mistrust and loss of focus in the
NRM camp. At the end, the love for money killed the motive of the day
and that is how NRM lost the vote to Lillian Aber.
Over 300 delegates from the different
institutions across Uganda have been camping at Teso College Aloite in
Soroti District for UNSA Annual General Meeting since Monday January
26th 2015. The meeting ended Friday 30th January 2015 with voting of new
leaders.
As the norm of UNSA, voting was conducted in the night.
Uganda National Students
Association UNSA is a democratically elected National Students
Council (NSC) formed under Section 30 of the Education Act.
Congratulations Lillian Aber and all the best in your leadership.
