How and when did you meet Joystna?
I met my wife in 1974. My friends and I were travelling on a double-decker bus to a wedding. On our way we saw two girls at a bus stop. I tapped my cousin and told him that I had seen a nice girl. Incidentally, my cousin knew her because they had studied together and were working together part time. He told me he would take me to their workplace at the weekend. When I went there, I got a job to work with them on Saturday mornings.

What struck you about this girl that found you following her to her place of work?
Well, she was a very pretty girl. She was size eight at the time and I liked her.

When you gathered the strength, how did you approach her?
I first approached her when I went to work with her. I had just got my British driving licence and I invited her and a friend for lunch to celebrate my achievement.

You know getting a driving licence in England is not easy, you have to go through a tough process, so it was a good thing to celebrate and luckily both girls accepted my invite. We went out for lunch but my cousin liked her too at the time, so there was a bit of competition. And the other thing is that her friend liked me. It was quite an interesting scenario.
How did you manage to come out on top in that competition?

Like I strategise in business, I also strategised to win her. Of course, we would go on coast trips in England, and slowly by slowly our bond grew close and stronger.

So you liked this girl at the bus stop and started taking her out. What did you discover about her traits as you got to know her better?
Oh, she was a very intelligent girl. Her parents were typical Indian from a middle class family. They wanted her to get married to an accountant, dentist, doctor or lawyer and I was doing lots of jobs, while studying part time. One of my jobs at the weekend was driving a taxi to make extra money.

Well, I think our bond and her love for me was probably stronger than what the family said. When the family found out, they sat her down for two days trying to convince her not to marry me.

But she resisted them. In the end, her father was understanding and told her if she had decided to marry me, then she could go ahead. When I was young, I had long hair, falling over my shoulders and I was a fancy dresser — bell bottoms and platform shoes.
How long did the two of you date?
We went out for three years. Two years after we met, we got engaged. Her parents are really conservative and felt we needed to get engaged early, and a year after that we got married.
