The session opened with Workers MP Dr. Sam Lyomoki presenting the preliminary findings of an independent investigation sanctioned by the Parliamentary commission into the death of the MP. The team chaired by Kinkizi East MP and Parliamentary Commissioner Dr. Chris Baryomunsi also had Mbarara Municipality MP Dr. Medard Bitekyerezo who participated in the post mortem examination of the dead legislator.
They noted that although they made significant findings, they provided no conclusive results on what caused the MP’s death. The team recommended that no further post mortem examination or extraction of samples be done on the body and that burial arrangements should proceed.
Later, legislators paid glowing tribute to their fallen colleague, describing the later Nebanda as independent minded, fearless, courageous, avid fighter for human rights and justice. They said the deceased Butaleja Woman MP fought tooth and nail for a country where corruption is detested and heavily punished.
This was the second sitting to pay tribute to the fallen MP after the first one flopped due to sharp disagreements on who and what killed her.
It remains unclear what exactly caused the death of the outspoken MP exactly a week ago today. Police and Parliament have clashed on the method of investigations. At the height of these differences, a consultant senior pathologist Dr. Sylvestre Onzivua, who was working on behalf of Parliament, was pulled off a plane at Entebbe Airport, detained for at least a day. Police say he was arrested for contravening the law and professional requirements. The pathologist who was released on bond was due to travel to South Africa for more toxicological tests on Nebanda’s body samples to establish what killed her. She will be laid to rest on Sunday at her ancestral home in Butaleja district.
